An interesting read in response to the kernel panic ability of the .DMG vulnerability:

Guess what I found? Not only is lmh’s diagnosis completely incorrect, but the problem isn’t a security flaw at all, let alone a critical, highly critical, or warn-everyone-via-the-BBC type event.

    http://alastairs-place.net/2006/11/dmg-vulnerability/

A very insteresting read.. most of which I only barely grasp. Object oriented programming just makes my eyes glaze thinking about it.. The gist:

    So, what have we learned:

    • It is not a memory overwrite bug.

    • It is not exploitable, except in that you can kernel panic a machine if you can persuade a user to double-click a damaged dmg file.

    • It is not, therefore, possible to use this bug for privilege elevation or to execute arbitrary code in the kernel.

In fact, all lmh has found here is a bug that causes a kernel panic. Not a security flaw. Not a memory corruption bug. Just a completely orderly kernel panic. There aren’t even any processor exceptions involved; the path to the panic is perfectly normal non-exceptional code using ordinary function calls.

AppleTalk: Who uses it, and why?

No one.. and stangely it's now ON by DEFAULT in all the MacTels I've received lately. No idea why.

Finally. Return of FW800 is welcome.

As I expected no revision to form factor, just a chip bump. Santa Rosa will be when they make them black and have the magnetic latch and easy access HD :).

I blame Appleguy for this. I have sold the sandwich shop. No sandwiches for anyone anymore!!

You need my approval to sell the sandwhich shop which I (in God-form) have given you. Consider it denied.

Ah, so ultimately there will still be 7+ cables, just not connected to the computer itself.

If it's connections to your laptop, that's a win right there. Once you've set up the other connected devices, you won't have to mess with them whenever you go somewhere with the laptop.

Anyone actually planning on buying this? Especially with a refresh right around the corner?

I dunno, September announcement and probably October for real availability seems a long time to wait.

    The white one looks hot.

Great game so far, who ever said I'll have loads of issues gaming on a PS3 must be dreaming and should probably get an upgrade from a dial-up speed Internet..

Everyone has to bash PSN because its free, only problem I have with that game is people playing CTF for kills...camping with the flag. NFS: Hot Pursuit is a good game, just got it monday and so far I like it, a lot better than GT5

It will suck like all Microsoft products except for the MS Mouse that is good.

MS Natural Keyboard is also good.

How come pretty much everthing Apple makes is good except for the Mouse

Apple mouse is beautiful and using one is not very stressful for your hand. Scroll ball in the Mighty Mouse is the best I've used and there's no comparison.

The only bad Apple mice were the hockey pucks.

    Nope, I haven't either

yeah, but i still haven't gotten my points back yet

I think they will come either this last update or the next one. As if you look at the hourly graphs for any team a huge spike existed for the last hour. This is probably stanford processing log files. It may take time for them all to be processed.

I did that but it still does not work. I rebooted my macbook, installed the latest security updates, wiped my 3GS, tried restoring and then updating to 4.3.2 - same thing just happened.

ATT, go check out HK to learn how to do it.

yeah exactly... they act like NYC and SF are the only densely populated places on earth, and good service just cant be achieved....

funny how Rogers doesnt have these problems in downtown Vancouver (which is denser than SF and almost as dense as Manhattan)

Goes against Steve Jobs saying Lion was shipping this summer. What is your source ?

Until Apple says it's delayed, I'll believe Apple when they say it ships this summer.

OK, here is a historic example:
"Apple missed Leopard's release time frame as originally announced by Apples CEO Steve Jobs. When first discussed in June Jobs had stated that Apple intended to release Leopard at the end of 2006 or early 2007. A year later, this was amended to Spring 2007; however on 12 April Apple issued a statement that its release would be delayed until October 2007 because of the development of the iPhone."
    (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_Leopard)

I do not believe that Adobe, Microsoft and other big companies need just a few months to make their apps Lion-compatible. Will Apple release Lion, if major companies do not support it? Unlikely. Q1 2012 is more likely.

According to CNET, the new Air will be released around June with a Sandy Bridge ULV Core i5 2537M chip 1.4 GHz that can turbo to 2.3 GHz.

So for .17 GHz upgrade we are sacrificing around 30% graphic power?

The CPU would be considerably faster, but the graphics ughh lol. The only way I can see myself grabbing a new one this year is if it comes with some type of integrated 3G plan similar to the iPad, then I'd consider downgrading the GPU.

Hi all, second post in the photog section, so excited to finally start getting into photography, I've wanted a DSLR for ages.

All C&C is so greatly appreciated.

No post edit, I'm waiting for adobe to release the raw updates, which hopefully are coming soon.

What most people are forgetting is that if no iPhone releases in June, I, along with many others will need to purchase the extra AppleCare so my phone still has a warranty.

$9,500,000,000 - that's just sitting around in cash with no long term debt. I think Apple's got plenty of "stamina"...

Yes however MS can try and fight it out for much longer, they have about 3 times that in cash and no long term debt as well. I can see this makeing some really kick a** iPods.

I'm still not too sure how gestures would work to control such a device unless there was a camera. Have you see the "gestures" video? It would be done by physically touching the iPod. No camera needed.

Oooh things are heating up :D

I'm not gonna buy music from Amazon again though, I downloaded 1 song for my Dad once from there. Because iTunes didn't have it, and Amazon emailed me for weeks with spam.

I guess Osama Bin Ladin's iPhone tipped Pres. Obama off.

I heard he didn't disable the location service on his newly purchased Tweetbot app. That damn Twitter will get you every time.

I hope this is true. A lot of people would go to T-Mobile because of their competitive pricing and that would encourage AT&T and Verizon to lower their prices too. Hell, I would consider switching.

To be honest, I've had more application crashes and restarts on OSX than I have under XP/Windows in the past 3 years. So much for "crash resistant" - and yes, I've had 4 kernel panics since I got this iMac home; that's more than the number of BSODs I've had under XP in 4 years.

Which means -- as everyone is saying -- that there is something wrong with your computer. I have a MacBook, two Intel iMacs, and a Mac Pro in my house, and they do not crash despite heavy daily use. My poor Mac Pro is running three different operating systems right now using Parallels, with nary a complaint. If you are getting unexplained kernel panics on a clean install of Mac OS X, then you have a hardware problem.

Hardware problems can affect any OS -- I've seen Windows systems that get daily BSODs. It's not because "Windows sucks", it's because there was a sub-par memory chip or somesuch in the system. Likewise Mac OS X crashes, when nobody else is experiencing a problem, are not an indication of the stability of the OS but rather of your hardware.

You're quoting me back to me when all of us (including me) were talking about that other guy that is having hardware problems because his Parallels "sucks." Parallels kicks ass on my C2D 20" iMac - hence the reason I piped up to be the first to say something is wrong with the other guy's machine if he can't get it working right.

On mine, which is stock hardware except for the 2GB of RAM I have in it, Parallels starts up in 4 seconds, boots my XP VM in 9-10, shuts down in 3-4, restarts the same VM in under 5 seconds (have yet to figure that one out, probably because of caching someplace; I don't even see the XP splash screen when it reboots/restarts because it's so fast), suspends in 22-25 seconds, resumes in 30-34, and I have no issues with any hardware at all in my XP VM. I even burn CDs and DVDs from the XP VM over FireWire/USB without hassles (Plextor FireWire/USB external).

So, on a similarly configured piece of hardware, if he's having suspend/resume times that seem to be 4-6x longer than others then, as you said, there is something wrong with the hardware. If none of the rest of us are having said issues, your line of logic would follow and apply to his machine since he's the only one reporting such ridiculously long suspend/resume times among other things.

Parallels works for me. Since I can't post specific benchmark data for Parallels and that other new-on-the-scene virtualization software for Macs <hint, hint> I'll just say this:

I completed the testing I said I was going to do, and Parallels simply lays the smackdown across that other software. And yes I'm well aware that other software is in beta - or pre-beta late alpha as one person put it - and that's fine. But I paid for Parallels, and to use that most famous line about Macs:

    It just works.

Oh yeah, it beats that other software even with multi-core CPU support enabled. Go figure.

    bb

Parallels sucks but until now its been the only REAL game in town.

Ah... the clarion call of lamers. Might as well bash Windows since it's so pervasive while you're at it. And it's still no excuse for stealing the software and breaking the faith. Bleh...
